Looking for something to do with your early Sunday summer evenings over the next month or so If you commented yes how about certain music Last Sunday s show with the San Diego Concert Band kicked off the Sundays at Six Summer Concerts in La Mesa s Harry Griffen Park The concerts which run each Sunday through July have become popular with La Mesa residents and visitors to the area Not only do the events serve up good music they also offer a chance for the group to come together Family friends and district groups plan their Sundays around the concerts La Mesa Mayor Mark Arapostathis disclosed A great number of arrive early to picnic in the park and save a spot under the beautiful trees at the Amphitheatre Attendance grows each year as more people join in These concerts are a fun free way to enjoy live music in one of La Mesa s scenic parks surrounded by both familiar and new faces According to Arapostathis the concert series has run for years providing free live music performed by incredibly talented bands People of all ages have a great time dancing relaxing with friends and family and enjoying the summer atmosphere It s the perfect way to spend a Sunday evening in La Mesa Arapostathis added Director of Neighborhood Services Misty Thompson noted that for the season La Mesa has a dedicated volunteer who will assist at all six concerts contributing approximately hours of help Their help includes clearing the stage of debris unloading and setting up audio equipment assisting the sound technician securing the stage area and current everything down at the end of each concert Thompson stated In addition the musicians themselves contribute a critical amount of time With approximately band members across the series including a -member concert band and each member volunteering about three hours per concert that adds up to nearly hours of volunteer time Their commitment is what brings the music and the society spirit to life Inquired if there was anything new this year with the concerts Thompson reported The popular Beatles tribute band is making a return They made their debut in last year s series and were a huge hit We had a packed crowd and great strength all night We re excited to welcome them back along with a lineup of other fantastic performers offering something for everyone to enjoy La Mesa Park and Recreation Foundation celebrates th anniversary Thompson added Additionally this year marks the th anniversary of the La Mesa Park Recreation Foundation The foundation proudly leads the organization of the Summer Concert Series in partnership with the city bringing free high-quality entertainment to the society each week During the concerts the district can stop by the foundation s table to learn more about their upcoming celebration happening on Sept They can also learn more about the foundation s ongoing impact in supporting locality recreation events and park improvements With the concerts running over the next five Sundays attendees can figure on enjoying free concerts featuring a wide variety of bands The music features classical jazz rock country and concert tunes It s a fantastic opportunity to enjoy an evening at Harry Griffen Park Amphitheatre with a picnic and blanket Thompson announced Plus there will be Kona Ice and on select dates face painters and vendors More information can be uncovered here
